U.S. semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has reached a historic milestone. On September 21, 2026, the company’s stock rose by around 10% in U.S. trading and crossed the $1 trillion market capitalization threshold for the first time. Driven by changing demand in the field of artificial intelligence, AMD pulled the entire semiconductor sector higher and helped the Nasdaq Composite reach a new record high.
The Leap Over the Trillion-Dollar Threshold
With a gain of 9.95%, AMD shares (ISIN: US0079031078) closed at $615.52, corresponding to a market capitalization of around $1.005 trillion. AMD is now the fourth U.S. chip company — after Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron — to join the exclusive club of trillion-dollar corporations. Worldwide, it is the seventh semiconductor manufacturer to achieve this valuation leap. The trigger was evident across the tech sector: the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.26% to a record high of 27,122.09 points, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 4.29%.
Agentic AI as a New Catalyst in the Data Center
The latest wave of buying is being driven by a structural shift in the AI market. The success of new autonomously acting AI assistants (agentic AI), such as Meta Platforms’ 'Muse' application, is sharply increasing demand for high-performance server processors. Unlike pure text chatbots, autonomous AI agents continuously perform complex background tasks. AMD is benefiting especially strongly from this with its EPYC server processors. In the second quarter of 2026, AMD’s data center segment already posted a 107% year-over-year increase in revenue to $6.7 billion, accounting for more than half of total revenue of $11.54 billion.
